River Breeze event location arrives at former drive-in site

River Breeze Event Center is the latest outdoor entertainment concept to be announced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Drive-ins, pod concerts, and outdoor festivals have all popped up in recent months as the desire for social events continues to grow.

Not much has been said about River Breeze outside of the background information the organizers shared with Knox News, but we plan to share more soon.

In the meantime, here’s what we know so far about this event hub arriving in the eastern part of Knox County (and some things we don’t know).

What we know

Where is it going to be?

The open-air convention center will be located at 6110 Asheville Highway, approximately 10 minutes east of downtown Knoxville and less than a mile from Interstate 40.

Who is behind?

BigWheel Events opens the site. Company events specialist Aaron Snukals will be the chief executive, the statement said.

BigWheel plans, markets and produces a variety of events, in addition to offering website design and digital marketing services.

The company has presented drive-through concerts at Smokies Stadium in Kodak and is working with Sea Ray on a “boat-in” movie night scheduled for May 28 at Lenoir City Park Cove.

What is the size of the room?

River Breeze is an outdoor events center on 7.5 acres, with 800 feet of waterfront space, according to a press release.

What does the name mean?

On the one hand, the event center is located on the Holston River. The site was also home to the River Breeze Drive-In, established in 1950.

What types of events will it host?

So far, the venue has announced that weddings, fundraisers and music festivals may take place on the grounds. The venue could also host fish, golf and RV shows.

What we don’t know

When will it open?

Although an opening date has not been announced, an opening ceremony is scheduled for June 1.

Aaron Snukals speaks during an announcement of the Music Feeds summer concert series lineup at World's Fair Park in March 2019. Snukals, who is now the Events Specialist for BigWheel, will also be Managing Director of River Breeze, a new outdoor event venue the company is bringing to a former East Knoxville drive-in site.

Local leaders, including representatives from the Knox County Mayor’s Office and Visit Knoxville, are expected to attend.

What will it look like?

The reports will be made public during the inauguration.

Are there any events planned for the venue?

No events have been announced, but outdoor concerts and festivals have become increasingly popular since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

For example, World’s Fair Park in downtown Knoxville will host three times as many events in April, May and June as it did during the same period in 2019.
