Inside the West End’s newly refurbished First Concert Hall

Attending a show at the now defunct Mod Club was a rite of passage for Toronto concertgoers. For 18 years, it was the perfect place to discover local talent or future global phenomena on the verge of glory. Although its name is different, the Axis Club embodies the same tumultuous energy and community bonds as its predecessor. When MFG Entertainment took over during the pandemic, they decided to spend the downtime revamping the technology and interior layout, before opening for live concerts in September 2021.

Essentially, it’s still a sweaty, sticky, boozy place to see your favorite indie band, but this time with much better sightlines, smarter layouts, full-size LED screens, and a sound system designed to keep neighbors out. residents to complain. The subwoofers are angled inward to direct sound into the space while minimizing outside noise:

The new owners have removed the bleachers from the old floor to increase capacity. Above the stage, windows overlooking the green room offer the artists a bird’s eye view of the crowd:

A new and improved live streaming and sound system makes Axis one of the most sophisticated venues in town. Far fans can stream shows through the Happin platform. A multi-camera setup and audio recording equipment allows the venue to transform into a daytime broadcast and production facility:

A sprawling mural by local artist John Nobrega immortalizes titans of music, including Drake, Amy Winehouse and The Weeknd, all artists who have performed on this same stage:

Spaces above and below the venue, including a Portuguese tapas restaurant and the Peach Gallery, are used as spillover areas to complement events or rehearsal spaces for visiting artists (like the lead singer of Crown Lands, Cody Bowles):
