Event venue

Discoveryland Ranch in Sand Springs reopens as event location

An Oklahoma landmark known for its outdoor musical performances will soon become a wedding and event venue.

Discoveryland Ranch in Sand Springs is hosting an open house this weekend. The new event building will be a venue for wedding receptions, indoor ceremonies and other events. It brings new additions to a property filled with old memories.

Now, people who visited it back then will have the chance to create new memories. For more than 30 years, Discoveryland was known for its performances of the musical “Oklahoma!” Thousands would fill the amphitheater all summer to watch.

“It was named the outer house for ‘Oklahoma!’ of Roger and Hammerstein,” owner Jason Shipman said.

Discoveryland closed in 2014 until five years later Shipman and his wife Kayla decided to bring it back to life.

“When we got here, we realized there was enough infrastructure left, from the amphitheater, the picnic pavilion, that we could really save them. And we thought that a new building of event would work really well in that space,” Shipman said.

The event building is 5,000 square feet of space for a banquet hall, catering prep kitchen, and locker rooms. The construction site is coming to an end and there are still some finishing touches to be done. Now called Discoveryland Ranch, the 525 acres will be used as a multi-purpose event center.

“Weddings, reunions, private parties, corporate events. Also, concerts,” Shipman said.

The Sand Springs High School band will be holding their spring concert here next month.

Shipman says weddings are already booked for the spring.

“We feel very lucky and blessed to have the opportunity to do this, Shipman said.

A place filled with history and nostalgia for many takes on a different meaning.

“It’s an opportunity for new memories and new experiences,” Shipman said.
